I have a few things to say regarding the behavior of a few fellow CPAC attendees. I'm not known for sitting back and shutting up. I am known for standing up and speaking up. I enjoyed most of my time spent at CPAC. I enjoyed the company of many fellow bloggers. However, there was a very rough and dark underbelly to the whole CPAC experience that I didn't see coming--and I didn't much care for. I will began my repudiation with a quote.
Silence in the face of evil is itself evil: God will not hold us guiltless. Not to speak is to speak. Not to act is to act. -Dietrich Bonhoeffer
I was all excited about having the opportunity to attend CPAC, meet some great speakers, and, most of all, see people I felt as though I already knew. There is a saying that your expectation almost never aligns with reality (i.e. Obama for the average American voter). I can safely say that was the case for me.
I had expected that many of these fine men and women would be true to their word. I expected to see Christian conservatives, as they so proudly and loudly call themselves. I expected honesty, kindness, and maybe a little dignity thrown into the mix. However, in a few extremely disappointing cases the reality did not compare to those expectations. I encountered men and women who would not know truth or honesty if it slapped them in their gullets, which, ironically, they were using to guzzle down beer after beer losing all dignity in the process. I expected Christian behavior from some of these men and women. I was welcomed with smell of alcohol and foul language oozing from the lips of people I once respected.
I hope that these men and women do not represent the future of the conservative movement. I hope it will be characterized by the same principles and strong character that our republic was built on. I must stress this was the exception to the rule, but nonetheless it was an embarrassment and disappointment.
